The Big Crafty does so much for this community! It’s like a vortex of uplifting energy! It gives artists an incredible opportunity to showcase their work, to be part of the artist community here in Asheville and make connections with other makers, and it gives the broader Asheville community the opportunity to find unique and special handmade gifts and treasures while also supporting small businesses. It truly benefits everyone!
The Big Crafty has opened up so much possibility for my business personally. The amount of exposure alone has been so enriching. It feels amazing to see my supporters showing up time after time at The Big Crafty, sharing their stories about how my pottery has impacted their lives, and hearing how excited they are to share my pottery with other people in their lives. Just knowing that so many local folks come looking for me at The Big Crafty each time is so heartwarming and uplifting to me. I’ve also connected with so many other business owners who want to collaborate!
Thank you for creating this event!!! It’s just so enriching to this community and makes Asheville a better place to live and thrive.

By being the largest and voted the best local craft show for so many years, the reputation of the Big Crafty precedes it. Everybody knows that if they attend this event, they’ll get to meet and buy from some of the best makers around. It draws a crowd of diverse patrons eager to discover handmade art, connecting artisans to their unique niche of targeted audience with organic ease. What a gift!

The support and love you have for your community and artists is unmatched by any other event we have attended. You guys are so loved by both your makers and community.
I have met so many amazing fellow makers and customers who encourage me to continue with what I do. The support and kindness I get at Big crafty is always the fresh perspective and boost I need to continue.
You guys are AMAZING!!! And I hope that I can be a part of your amazing community for years to come. You guys really care and that care shows in the way big crafty is run. Really honored to be a part.

The Big Crafty fills a hole that no other market or organization does for Asheville. It truly brings out the best of the best of the art scene here and brings in high volume like no other art market or event can.
My market career has grown significantly through involvement and experience over multiple years at the Big Crafty. The Crafty accepted me when I was still a small creator and has helped inspire and directly develop my approach. The connections I’ve made through my involvement have been invaluable, and the confidence I’ve gained along the way has changed everything for me.

I consider the Big Crafty the moment every year when i don’t feel like an isolated artist but feel connected to a wider web of makers celebrated by its community. Even seeing the signs downtown before the show makes me feel like what we do as artists is a vital part of what Asheville is. Though it’s hard for me to keep track of everyone i meet there, I feel like Big Crafty gives people a sense of relationship and personal connection to artists, rather than a two-steps removed transaction, and that’s what keeps them coming back year after year. The artists feel like we’re a part of something bigger, and by extension, the larger community that comes gets to feel like they are also a part of something really special and unique, not just in our area, but really in the world.

The Big Crafty connects me to my customers in such a personal way. They return and tell me how they used my handwork in the year that’s past and who this new gift will be for. It gives a sense of meaning to my work. Asheville is a city that loves handmade and showers us with sales and praise when we bring our work to show. It’s the party at the end of so many hours of solitary stitching. It sustains me.

I was so grateful for the big crafty keeping the show despite the storm, and checking in with artists to help after the devastation. It was such a wonderful experience to connect with local artists at the show, and have people from the organization come by and check on us during the market. Conversations with buyers have inspired new pieces, meeting other artists inspires new conversations and connections, and it helps so much with my exposure as well. Not only that, but I’m also able to connect with artists I’ve looked up to and have inspired me.

The Big Crafty was an event I was aware of and loved before relocating to Asheville. The Big Crafty Shows (as well as Little Crafty) have absolutely made a significant impact on my work and business. They have been my most successful and lucrative shows I have done to date. Not only have I profited monetarily but I have also been able to connect with so many awesome local artists. Feeling a part of the community is a huge success to me. I have also met and started relationships with people at the shows who are becoming repeat customers. I think it’s really important, especially in our current cultural condition, to nurture community in creative spaces. The Crafty really works to uplift all of its makers, and cultivate an enjoyable experience for attendees. It’s also unique to have an event that particularly focuses on visual art; most other large-scale events I attend are cultural festivals, but this is the only event I do every year that’s specifically for visual artists. Facilitating an event that promotes conversation and connection for artists, audiences, and businesses like this is really unique and special 🙂

More than any other organization in Asheville, Horse+Hero/the Big Crafty have aided us to grow our business into what it is today. Asheville is a well known art town and one that attracts millions of visitors every year. Horse & Hero and the biannual big crafty are a pillar of the Asheville downtown art scene and as such we can thank them for our city’s excellent reputation. We have received numerous orders and print jobs from people that first learned of our little print shop while perusing the shelves at H&H or chatting with us at The Big Crafty. Those people then take our multiples home and spread them further as they share them with friends and family or place them in their place of business for other potential clients to admire. The exposure that Justin and Brandy provide to innumerable artists both established and up-and-coming is priceless and immeasurable. They provide the ecosystem in which a city known for its working arts economy is able to thrive. We are all lucky to have them.

Being a part of the show gives an artist around here ‘street cred’ because it’s such a well attended event. I’ve seen the crowds at many shows/festivals in the area and this is one that really attracts shoppers. It has really helped us in what is usually a slow time. Also, it’s a very good show to network, many of the artists are willing to collaborate and engage with each other. Some shows I’ve vended at had a very competitive atmosphere, which isn’t great for making connections.

The thing that makes y’all stand out from other folks I’ve worked with in the past for shows is the quality of community you’ve built. Shows are *stressful* for everyone involved, and I know it can be hard to cultivate a sense of calm and warmth when there are so many logistics to go into such a huge event. It’s the vibe that really makes y’all unique. The sense that people showing up to shop and support are doing so because they love what you do and what you stand for. The Big Crafty has contributed greatly in the art community. As an Asheville native there was no place for me to display, sell or even share my dolls. No one seemed interested. From the first time I was able to become a vendor it has opened up so many opportunities. I’m truly grateful!

I’m so grateful for the amazing resource Horse and Hero and Big Crafty has been for Asheville area arts and for myself as an artist. Brandy and Justin have been among WNC’s biggest arts champions for over 2 decades. They began producing their craft fair in 2008 at the Gray Eagle and grew their event to two days twice a year. From their humble beginnings, they have scaled to fill the Harrah’s Cherokee Center to capacity and support hundreds of artists through their efforts along the way.
The Big Crafty welcomes artists from all levels of experience- from the fledgling crafter trying out their first show to award winning juried professional artists. They believe in making art accessible to all and creating opportunities for artists to support themselves financially through creating hand to heart events that celebrate WNC’s exuberant creative community. To say their work has set the tone for Asheville’s creative economy is an understatement.

It brings a huge community and network together of artists and makers. I’ve met so many people through Big Crafty that have brought many opportunities and introduced new ideas on ways to do things that have altered the way I run my business.

The Crafty is a staple for my yearly income and an inspiration to create. I make it my goal every Crafty to have fresh pieces and new items to add to my display. It also plays a key role in my connection to the community. This is one of the only markets I participate in, and it’s the primary way I can meet my supporters. There is incredible community among artists and makers in the greater Asheville area and The Big Crafty is owed much credit for this. The Big Crafty provides an opportunity for makers and crafters to come together to meet each other, be inspired by each other, learn from each other, and shop from each other.

The Big Crafty is sooo important – it provides makers with an opportunity to meet the community and share their work. It also shows the community how prominent our makes are – many of us work as small independent businesses out of our homes, studios, or modest retail spaces. I think [The Big Crafty] helps us feel connected to our community. We spend a lot of time hunkered down in the studio so it’s a needed breath of fresh air to put what we’ve been working on in front of a bigger crowd of people, talk to our friends, see what the art/craft community is up to. It’s all about the art and the maker, which is not the case with a lot of other shows that also often feature live music, food trucks, breweries, and other entertainment. While that can be a fun experience, for the maker, all this extra fanfare creates a watered-down/distracted experience. Big Crafty has got it right–people know why they are coming to the event: to support local artists and find one-of-a-kind handmade items…and they can enjoy a cold beverage and a hot dog to fuel their shopping trip, which is just an added bonus. I’m not only a maker at the BC but I’m also a shopper, and I personally appreciate having such easy access to so many amazing handmade treasures all in one place. There’s no other event like the BC!
It’s the biggest/most profitable in-person event we do, and a great opportunity to connect with our customers face-to-face. The BC is where I feature all my new work. I’ve had many local businesses approach me at this show because they want to carry my work in their shops, which has made a big impact on my business. I’ve also met so many other incredible makers and we show each other support throughout the year.
I feel really lucky to have been included in this event for the last few years. I know it’s highly regarded in the community–among artists and consumers alike! It’s a very special and important gathering for our community here in Asheville, and the excitement in the room is palpable.

Big Crafty is more than a business. It’s a celebration of craft and of the unique cool that is Asheville. I love how excited the attendees are at each show and I look forward to being there as a part of that vibe each year.

The Big Crafty helps emerging artists to build a local supportive network, generate sales, and develop a level of professionalism.
The Big Crafty has been a consistent and reliable source of income 2 times per year. Since attending the Big Crafty I have gained a following of returned customers that have helped to sustain my business. Thank you for all your hard work!

Very thankful to be a part of this show it’s a big part of my year and is always a great motivator in my studio! It means a lot to me to be able to sell my work in my hometown!

It gave me a much-needed boost of confidence! It helped get my name out there. It motivated me to relaunch my online store and begin building an online presence for my business, Stacking Stones Studio, beyond my art practice. So much of being an artist is networking, being proactive in meeting people, and sharing our work. Big Crafty helps all that happen. Thanks for giving me a chance and accepting my application! I hope to have the opportunity to vend again – truly a fantastic experience.

I made so many amazing connections and gained more opportunities. I felt proud of my work, got to promote the importance of hand-made work and creativity to everyone who passed through, and felt so excited to be a part of the art community in Asheville which has always felt like it’s welcomed me with open arms. I love the crafty and am so grateful for you all.

Amazing support and networking possibilities.
It has allowed me to meet other makers here in town and soooo many custom order followups that have turned into clients.
You guys are awesome! Thanks for everything you do for us.

Thank you so much for everything! Y’all freaking rock. This year has been rough with the economy. My sales have been down at most shows this year, but I still managed to have my second best big crafty ever! It’s so appreciated.

[The Big Crafty provides] a quality market and platform for artists to sell at a fraction of the price of other markets. For real, I used to do 20+ markets a year all over the US and the quality fair you offer for such an affordable booth fee is amazing.
As a first timer I got the opportunity to introduce my work to enthusiastic and kind customers and business owners. You really attract quality audience.
Again – keep doing what you’re doing. The affordable booth fee mixed with the incredible show out and quality of market you’ve created is so incredibly supportive for artists who want to sell. Thank you.

The Big Crafty provides exceptional accessibility for artists at every stage of their career. By encouraging, promoting, and empowering artists, particularly by investing in new artists. For me, it is community building that happens between makers that happens at Big Crafty. Also being a hometown show for it, Big Crafty has allowed me to build relationships with customers/ collectors and community relationships. Big Crafty generates tons of income for makers.

I am sure I do not know the full breadth of what Justin and Brandy do for the community…but I would say that they support and encourage all of us, they bring us together and show up endlessly to encourage, promote, connect, and nourish our spirits. I love you and appreciate you both and everyone that works with you more than mere words can say. Thank you.

It was a huge boost to my sales and I was already contacted by a shop interested in wholesaling my pieces.
This was my best event of the year. I had a great time and the customers were so engaging. No other out of town event I’ve done has compared with y’all!

The Big Crafty is a great inspiration to makers of all varieties. The event itself exudes a fantastic D.I.Y. energy; an “anything is possible” feeling. It is very empowering for the community! The Big Crafty has given me a beautiful community of makers and supporters. I consider The Big Crafty to be my primary fundraiser and because of the event’s supporters, I have been able to reach far beyond Asheville.

Being a part of The Big Crafty has been essential in developing my career as an illustrator in Asheville. Brandy and Justin have provided a safe space for artists to support each that is inclusive by creating this event. Horse and Hero is also a place I have so much love for. They work to promote and support the artists that sell their work in their store and I have had people from across the county reach out to me saying they visited Asheville and found my work at H&H then became a recurring customer in turn helping me grow my career even further. Both The Big Crafty and Horse and Hero are Asheville staples and I couldn’t imagine this place without them.

The Big Crafty is the vessel which is filled by artists and community all happily mixed together, everyone contributing in a meaningful way. Seriously it’s great.

My first Big Crafty was when I felt like I could actually make it as an artist. The next year I planned my year around shows. No matter how lagging or disappointing sales or other shows have been through the year, I know I’ll make it up and come back out feeling OK after the Big Crafty and that contributes to a reliable sense of financial security each holiday season. Thank you for what you do! It is really spectacular.

I always look forward to the next Big Crafty, to take what I have learned from each show and present new pieces to fill that need. It has humbled me in many ways, as I interact with the wonderful people and artists from the Asheville area.

Big Crafty is pretty much the only show I do anymore. It’s not been worth it for me to do other shows, the community just isn’t there in the same way. I see the same folks year after year, who specifically seek out Big Crafty to see their favorite artists in-person. The two shows a year are a significant portion of my income and in most cases the only way people can shop with me in person. I make connections with custom clients and wholesale partners. It is networking and community building. Just so grateful to be part of your community.

This was my first Big Crafty. I’m so grateful to have been included. As an artist who is still getting established in the Asheville area, this was a big deal for me! Meeting thousands of locals and many other artists helped me build awareness around my brand. It gave me in-person confirmation of what pieces people like. On a personal level, feeling a part of this community was really rewarding for me. I hope to join many more to come!

A lot of my work doesn’t translate well online, so being able to show it in person at The Big Crafty makes a big difference in my business. I make work that tends to resonate on a personal level with people, and they seem to really appreciate having a chance to meet me, have a real connection, and tell me what my work means to them. This connection buoys me to continue making what I make.
You guys are awesome, thanks for all the hard work you do to keep this going year after year 🙂

It links artists with community members and is a great space to share and offer what you make as an artist!
Big crafty has made a significant impact on my work it allows me to network with others in and outside of the Asheville community.
Thank you big crafty!! All so wonderful to be a part of it!

The Big Crafty connects both community members and tourists with incredible local crafts people and artists. They bridge the gap between artist and audience. They also aid in education and help bring artists together to teach one another. Their support of local artists is uncompromised. Although I have only been a part of the community for less than a year, I always feel so much love and support from both Brandy and Justin. They bring out the best in everyone.

It is a really wonderful show that acts as a beacon to the community as this is the place to see all the artisans and crafters of the area. Having such a robust and well supported art community within the community brings a lot of joy. Artists help bring light and hope, this helps people to see where we can go especially in moments of struggle.

It’s such a fun event to look forward to as a patron & as a vendor it is such a well attended show that I know I will make new connections and plenty of sales.
The July show will only be my second time as a vendor, but The Big Crafty sales from December helped get me through the winter months where online and gallery sales were very low. I’m so grateful to get to participate in such a fun and successful event.

TBC brings in so many new artists each year, and continues to provide a platform for more established artists as well. I appreciate seeing new and familiar faces at the events and a crowd of patrons that are as eclectic as Asheville is itself. Making new friends with fellow artists and seeing old friends from around town are some of my favorite parts of TBC.
I consider TBC to have played a large role in the growing of Ross Pottery. TBC was the first two day market my wife and I attended as artists and we left feeling buoyed by our community and empowered to grow our business. With the experience gained from TBC we have been able to attend similar events with confidence. We’ve grown our customer base and are able to offer more art and art related events to our community. So thank you Big Crafty!

One of the first events I attended when I moved to Asheville eight years ago was The Big Crafty. I was struck by the diverse range and quality of creative work that was presented, but perhaps even more compelling was the overwhelming sense of community that was fostered at the event. It was such an exciting event to attend as someone who was new to the area. In the years since I feel so fortunate to be welcomed into this creative community and become a part of managing the day-to-day operations at Horse and Hero. At the gallery we are able to open our doors every day to welcome those visiting the area, and some of the most common comments I hear from visitors are “This is always my first stop when I come to Asheville” or “I wish there was something like this in my community”. Perhaps one of the most encouraging reasons people live and visit Asheville is its authentic, community driven creativity, and The Big Crafty and Horse and Hero are an integral part of the infrastructure that makes this community thrive.

It also has a solid reputation for showing an amazing variety of arts and crafts. The Big Crafty also has a wonderful vibe and a joy to be in it or to come and shop unique pieces of art.
The Big Crafty has made an important impact on my small business. I have met many people through this event that have been interested in my work, and in turn has been very profitable. I have return customers at the Big Crafty which I love.

It has created a reliable rhythm for interactions between the community and artists and among the artists. It helps artists who are just getting started as well as those who are established — there’s really nothing to compare it to in Asheville.

I recommend The Big Crafty constantly to other maker friends I meet, because it’s truly one of the best-run and most supportive markets I’ve been part of. I honestly don’t have a single bad thing to say. I love being part of this community, and it always feels generous, welcoming, and genuinely invested in the artists who participate. Y’all go above and beyond each event and I am so, so grateful.

This is my biggest, most anticipated event of the year. It is so well organized and marketed that the attending crowd is just as excited to be there as the vendors. No other market I’ve vended with has had such an eager crowd!
I was a general attendee for years before I worked up the courage to apply as a vendor. To be accepted among so much talent was one thing but to connect to such an excited crowd of patrons The Big Crafty draws in was a whole other world. It’s so refreshing to get in-person reactions to my art in a time where social media rules the majority of our marketing interactions. The folks who attend The Big Crafty truly come to see incredible art made by incredible artists.

I was exposed to so many potential new customers. Tons of people took cards and left emails. I was approached by a gallery to sell my work and have had websites sales already! It has already made a positive impact to my business! It’s not easy making a living as an artist and being able to share my work with the large audience that The Big Crafty draws is invaluable for the future of my business.

It’s a major highlight of the year for connection and for sales. The connection with fellow artists and the feedback from new and repeat customers is invaluable. The income from sales is important to me – it buys groceries. But connecting with customers feeds me as well. Making is often solitary. Delivering your offering to people who delight in your work is reward for the soul. Big Crafty draws that kind of gathering.

Between the attention from TBC’s social media marketing and the event itself, I’ve been able to reach and connect with so many more people that I wouldn’t have been able to do in such a short amount of time. As someone who is just starting out, it’s been a challenge accessing and tangibly reaching my target market, who probably tend to be less online, and being able to see my products for themselves makes a huge difference in connecting with potential buyers, even if they don’t walk away with something at the show.
So grateful for the experience and opportunity to have a booth this go ’round! It was an absolutely overwhelming experience, in a completely positive way. I didn’t set high expectations in terms of sales, and yet it was definitely a profitable show in those terms. More than that, the opportunity to connect and chat with folks face to face and really talk about what I do makes a huge difference vs. trying to convey the same information through a social media/website interface. Looking forward to doing more in the future if I can!

I know that many of my customers travel to Asheville specifically to attend The Big Crafty. I believe it continues to be a signature art event for the city keeping Asheville art vibrant, exciting, and important.
The Big Crafty feels like a family… a super supportive and creative family! So many of my most faithful customers have found me at The Crafty and continue to support me. I have also met so many amazing artists through the show that have become dear friends. Without the support of show, the shoppers, and the amazing artists I’m not sure where I’d be. I’m so grateful to be a part of the Big Crafty family!!

As a newer artist, having this event in my hometown has been key to my growth. My sales have steadily increased at each show, and while they are still modest, The Big Crafty has been invaluable in helping me understand which pieces resonate most with customers. Just as importantly, it allows me to introduce my work to new audiences and let people know I’m available for custom work, connections that continue to make a meaningful impact beyond the event itself.
